When Must I Pay the Dartford Crossing Charge Online?

The Dartford Crossing charge is a mandatory toll that applies to vehicles using the Dartford Crossing between Essex and Kent, which includes the Queen Elizabeth II Bridge and the Dartford Tunnels. To avoid fines and penalties, it’s essential to pay the toll at the right time. The payment deadline is a crucial aspect of the Dartford Crossing charge online process, and understanding it can help you avoid unnecessary costs.

The Dartford Crossing charge must be paid by pay dart charge you use the crossing. This means that if you cross the Dartford Crossing on any given day, you have until midnight of the following day to make the payment. For example, if you use the crossing on a Monday, the toll must be paid by midnight Tuesday. If you cross at 9 PM on a Monday, the toll payment is still due by midnight Tuesday.

The online system provides the flexibility to pay the toll at any time within that 24-hour window. This can be done through the official Dart Charge website or via the Dart Charge mobile app. However, failing to make the payment by midnight the day after crossing results in a penalty charge, which is significantly higher than the standard toll rate.

It’s also worth noting that payment cannot be made before the crossing itself—pre-paying for the toll isn’t an option. You are only required to pay once you have actually used the crossing. This allows drivers to check whether they’ve crossed during the tolling hours (6 AM to 10 PM) and assess the correct charge for their vehicle type.
