How to Travel to Spanish Wells: Your Gateway to Paradise

Getting to Spanish Wells is relatively straightforward, though the island’s remote location means that travel requires a bit of planning. The island is situated just off the northern tip of Eleuthera, one of the larger islands in the Bahamas. While Spanish Wells Bahamas  is not as easily accessible as other Bahamian destinations, its seclusion is part of its charm and appeal.

By Air

The most common way to reach Spanish Wells is by flying into North Eleuthera Airport (ELH), which is located about 20 minutes away from the island. North Eleuthera is serviced by several domestic airlines, including Bahamasair and Pineapple Air, which offer flights from Nassau and other Bahamian islands. The airport is relatively small, but it offers convenient connections to Spanish Wells.

From North Eleuthera, visitors can take a short 10-minute ferry ride to Spanish Wells. The ferry operates several times a day, and tickets are available at the ferry dock. Alternatively, visitors can arrange for private boat transfers from Eleuthera to Spanish Wells, which can be a more personalized and scenic option.

By Sea

For those traveling from other parts of the Bahamas, Spanish Wells can also be reached by private boat. The island’s harbor is well-protected, and there are several marinas where boats can dock. Private charters are available from nearby islands, including Nassau, and many boaters choose to visit Spanish Wells for its quiet atmosphere and beautiful waters.

Travel Tips

  • Ferry schedules: It’s important to check the ferry schedules in advance, especially if you’re traveling during peak season. Ferries are typically more frequent during the daytime but may have limited service during holidays or off-season periods.

  • Accommodation options: Spanish Wells offers a variety of accommodations, from small guesthouses and boutique hotels to vacation rentals. While the island has limited high-end resort options, the accommodations are generally comfortable and offer a more intimate, personalized experience.

  • Car rentals: While you won’t need a car on the island itself, renting one on Eleuthera can be useful for getting around North Eleuthera or exploring nearby islands. Taxis and golf carts are also available for transport on Spanish Wells.
